CopyNo

This is amazing. It's software that prevents users from downloading images! How does it do it, you ask? According to the site, "CopyNo is a patent-pending, multi-leveled copyright warning/system and Application." What's this multi-leveled system? I'm glad you asked. First, it links the images to this. More importantly, it creates a Javascript rollover to prevent people from right-clicking to save-as. That's right. This is software that makes a link AND a rollover. I wish I'd thought to patent that combo back in 1998 when I started using it. I'm off to work on a new project called MusicNo that prevents you from stealing music by muting your speakers.

2 Worms3d files for y'all

For those who've gotten the Worms3d demo working, I've uploaded a "cheater" program which will allow you to enable many of the game's weapons in the demo. Super-sheep are particularly fun. Items without an icon in the cheat program, BTW, will crash the game. It also lets you disable the time limits, up the resolution to 1600x1200, and other neat stuff.

For everyone interested in the game, demo or not, here's an interesting chart I pulled off their forums:

EDIT: Will put the image in the replies. Was silly of me to post it on the main page.

It's not official, just fan created based on screenshots at the site and comments from the developers in the forums/press. The green and blue checkmarks are weapons confirmed to be in the final game. The red X's are weapons confirmed not to be in the final game. Squares with no symbol are unknown.

Note that this doesn't show the items completely new in Worms3d; for example, girders are out, but there's a nifty "bridge building kit" that you can enable in the demo that more than replaces its function.

Bug List/Feature Request - Bump again

For my own sanity, let's keep all bug reports and feature requests to this thread so I can find them. I tried to gather all that have been posted so far. Let me know if I missed any. I'll keep this post edited to show the current list. The list as of now:
  • Bugs
    • Style sheets don't load all parts of the page
This is a known bug for Mozilla. For now, it appears that the blue and green styles both work fine. If you want to use another, just refresh and it seems to fix itself. Annoying, but what can ya do? Currently looking into alternatives.

By making Matt constantly refresh while I tried some things, I think it's working (we're now using PHP to switch instead of Javascript). If anyone notices it not working, let me know!
    • Use selected style in admin pages.
    • Stop long links from running off the side of the screen.
  • Feature requests
    • Allow editing for comments by logged-in users
There should be an edit link next to any post you make while logged in. Let me know if you find one of your posts that you can't edit.
    • Add Ninja and Quotes to main menu for public access
    • Don't display duplicate referrers
    • Search capability

A Mighty Wind

The cast of A Mighty Wind (minus Fred Willard and Ed Begley, Jr.) is doing a small west coast tour, and they're playing the Warfield on November 13th. It sounds like each band does a set, and Bob Balaban's character is still serving as MC of the event. I was debating coming up to the bay area around then anyway, so I'm now considering going. Looks like tickets are 35 bucks and go on sale tomorrow. Would any other bay area folks be interested in going? I'm not 100% sure I'm even in at this point, but I figured I'd ask now. It sorta depends on the amount of contract work I can get in the next few days. It's a bit more than I'd want to pay, but I figure this chance won't happen again, and since this does take place post-movie, it's almost worth the price to see [spoiler] (select to see)Harry Shearer in the dress[/spoiler].

Obfuscation

I was scrolling through some code in theTombs, and I came on this line:

_root.MessageBox.addMessage("Casting \""+spellList[tablets[hotkeys[num]][0]][tablets[hotkeys[num]][1]][tablets[hotkeys[num]][2]].shortDescription+".\" ", false);

That is the most fsucked up array call I've ever seen, much less written. I've got to stop programming at 4am...

!bills

So... I got a little surprise in the mail today.

I don't know if any of you had heard about that energy refund, but I had been curious how they were going to do refunds to former (not current) customers, like us. Well, I found out today: they still send you a refund.

So, while you guys might have thought your bills and such were done... they're not... or at least the money shuffling isn't.

Which also means that I now owe Bryce and Jeff $11.33. Either of you care for me to write you a check, or do you just want me to treat you to lunch/dinner/etc the next time I see you?

Posted by brian on 9/26/03 at 9:07PM • linkcomment (6)

formatting/php

Ok... so... I just loaded up MC from home (in NS 7.1), and for some reason I'm not logged in.

However, that reveals this bug: when not logged in, the "online" section shows this instead:

Warning: sort() expects parameter 1 to be array, null given in /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/morecooler.com/httpdocs/menu.inc on line 23

Warning: Bad arguments to implode() in /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/morecooler.com/httpdocs/menu.inc on line 24

Second, now that I am logged in, the admin section has no more "style" -- is this intentional or at least known?

Anyone see the 'American' Coupling last night?

Was flipping channels, saw the show 'coupling' and wondered why I wasn't watching BBC... then I recalled Martin talking about the American remake. It just didn't seem as funny as the English one. Especially the actor who they got to play 'Jeff' (blast my common name), wasn't particularly funny or quirky like the English version is.

Anyway, it was the very first episode as far as I can tell, just totally re-acted by an american cast (or mostly american). Why they don't just run the original thing is beyond me.

Linguistics

So I'm sitting in linguistics today (MOST BORING CLASS EVER), and we get to talking about phonemes, words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The professor asks for an example of a word.

Someone says "cat."

"Good," he says. "Now, the difference between phrases and clauses is very subtle: a clause is a phrase with a verb. So, does anyone have an example of a phrase?"

"The door," replies another student.

"Also good. Now, anyone have an example of a clause?"

I raise my hand.

"Matt Rung."

Randomosity.

Why, hello there, boys. ;D

Matt kicked Bryce's ass into giving me an account. They went behind the swingset to duke it out and everything. ...or, we were sitting in Cheesecake Factory talking and Matt decided that it would be easier to give me an account so I could understand what they were talking about when they referenced the quotes page. I've already added my favorite quote as of recently.

Now, as for what I really wanted to say... I'm cross-posting this from my LiveJournal, since nobody ever reads that thing, anyway.

---

So today's the 25th anniversary of the crash of PSA Flight 182 in North Park (a commmunity in San Diego).

My dad could have very well been on that flight, too, and if he had I wouldn't have been here! PSA 182 was a normal commuter flight between Sacramento and San Diego, and my dad was scheduled on PSA 182 for September 26th, 1978 -- the next day. He'd been up in Sacramento for a meeting with a bunch of coworkers. When they heard news of the flight's crash, they all had to call home and assure their wives that they were okay, since there'd been some talk of catching the earlier flight if the meetings they had to attend ran short. You can bet it was not a happy hour or two that my mother had to endure before my dad got word of the crash and called her.

To top it all off, my Grandma Wroe used to own a house on Arizona St. in North Park. She was doing dishes in her kitchen, who's window faces the street, when the crash occured. She saw the fireball descend down into the neighborhood.

We still go to Chris' Market every once in awhile for chorizo, which is down in North Park. Driving through there, there's all these old houses that were built in the 50's, with a strange section of newer houses lining the part of the street where the plane hit. It's rather creepy.

Found in an old e-mail...

I just found this in an old e-mail I sent regarding Netscape 4.x being used in offices despite sucking:
Just tell everyone you work with that upgrading to Netscape 6.0 prevents evil men from being downloaded onto their hard drive. No one wants evil little men on their hard drive. If they don't listen, secretly set all their start pages to a web page with pictures of Gary Coleman and Verne Troyer with the words "We've arrived." Then you can say "I told you so."

Speed Demon

If y'all have a second, and you haven't installed Flash Player 7, I'd appreciate if you'd help me with a quick test:

1) Open the old "The Tombs" game.

2) Move around; get a feel for the speed of it.

3) Try running my uber-debug copy which I just finished converting to Flash Player 7. (Spent nearly three hours tracking down two typos; Flash Player 7 is case-sensitive, unlike Player 6! Thank goodness for small favors: I thought version 6 was case sensitive, so the only things I had to change were actual typos that the case insensitivity let by.)

4) If you don't mind, please try installing the new player and give the new version a shot.

Two sets of questions:
- Did it automagically prompt you to upgrade your player? What did the window look like before you updated? What browser are you using?
- Is this faster, or is it my imagination? I can't go back and try the original out anymore, because it's now a Flash 6 movie running on the faster Flash 7 player.

Incidentally, this copy is pretty crappy; I was in the middle of several things and had lots of stuff disabled when I discovered Flash MX 2004 had been released. It's also in debug mode; you can't die, and you can press the number 1 (not on the numpad) to access the level design mode. If you want to play with the level design, open the panel, click "default", edit those values, and click "make". Rinse and repeat. Some values WILL crash the player, though; be forewarned.

I appreciate your help, guys. Hopefully, these speed increases, if I'm not imagining the whole thing, will help make the game more enjoyable. I may also be able to eke out even more speed if I rewrite large portions in ActionScript 2.0, but don't hold yer breath; it's a considerably different animal.

Well-written

Michael Moore responds to claims that "Bowling for Columbine" is fiction.

Interesting read; he's got a good command of the language. I haven't been following this whole deal much, so I don't know if he addresses all pertinent claims with relation to the film, but it does rather neatly cut down much of his opposition.

theTombs

I doubt this applies to anyone here, but don't try to send me e-mail @thetombs.com. I've had to shut all e-mail off and set up a bounce message because some a$$hole has used random addresses @thetombs.com as the return addresses for thousands of e-mails, and a good percentage of them are bouncing. We're talking 20-30 or more an hour. I think I can have everything EXCEPT webmaster@thetombs bounce, but I'd rather just wait and see if the flood subsides.

In other news, I'm back at 'Poly for one last go-round. I have Internet access up, so I'll be back on ICQ when I'm home. Interesting note: the house isn't wired, but the guy renting the other room set up a wireless access point near the cable modem. So I've configured my laptop to access the net over WiFi and then share the connection over ethernet. Kind of a weird setup.

You can grab the torrent in our files section.

Just an unofficial leaked demo though, still, I am happy.

If this works on your PC, tell me. As far as I can tell, it is missing a file which should be on the worms3D website, but now I can't get there.

(re-reupdate)
Now the site is fully down, whatever. I am getting tired of working on this.

Ok, for real now, you can get the demo at there website

Search for "Cult of the Clouds" (or "Cult of the Cloudes", as they seem to have chosen to spell it). It seems my mod has been incorporated into some sort of tremendously crappy fanfic. What's more, as much of the text in that section is mine but they've added typos galore, it appears they copied it down by hand then typed it out again, rather than pull the text out of the mod.

I don't know what to make of this, really. Very odd. Almost as odd as the fact that a google for "cult of the clouds" returns more non-English sites carrying the file than English ones.

Warren Zevon

I woke up this morning to hear some sad, yet not unexpected news. Best known for his hit Werewolves of London, singer/songwriter Warren Zevon died in his sleep yesterday. Last August, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and given three months to live. He used this time to record The Wind, his final album. In a released statement last year, he said "I'm okay with it, but it'll be a drag if I don't make it till the next James Bond movie comes out." Not only did he make it to see the release, he made it to the DVD release, not to mention the birth of his first grandchildren and the release of his final album. Nine months after he was supposed to die.

The album is extremely powerful, and has been getting glowing reviews in the media (though it's a shame it took his illness to get his due in the mainstream). The album serves a goodbye to his friends, family, and fans, and includes an all-star list of guest appearances. In his final appearance on Letterman in October, he was asked, "From your perspective now, do you know something about life and death that maybe I don't know now?" Zevon replied, "Not unless I know how much you're supposed to enjoy every sandwich." The crowd went completely silent.

I'll be heading back to SLO on the 17th or 18th of this month, so anyone who had me bring stuff back for them probably needs to come get it sometime soon. If you can't make it, I can store it for longer, but I'd prefer to get it outta there.

Here's my list, off the top of my head. Some of this stuff might have been intended for Goodwill, I can't remember. The truck broke down so we didn't do a goodwill run; just brought everything back with us.

Papa-san chair - Chris
Lamps - Bryce
Glass table - Matt
Microwave - anyone want it? Got three now.

Blast, I know I'm forgetting a few things. I'll be over there in the next couple days and fill in the blanks, unless y'all remember what I'm forgetting.
