The internal letters are simply inverted - i.e. simply becomes slpmiy.

too far?

Is the problem with this method just that the letters are too far from where we expect them? Though that slashdot example of leaving them out completely was readable, I think it would have also been equally readable if the letters were in this pattern. However, the text above is a bit more complex (by design, it appears) so we need more context (or pieces in the middle) to interpret it.... So, I'd say that the original assertion that the position of the letters in the middle doesn't matter was an oversimplification.
