World of Warcraft ^H^H^H^H^H-crash

Long server downtimes, server crashes/instability, and even login queues (suck). Many are now calling this World of Warcrash, as the servers tend to crash regular, at least once a day for certain ones.

Thing is, about 20 of the most populous servers are affected. Many have fine experiences logging in on servers brought up shortly after the game's release.

Unfortunately, Chris and I are on one of those 20 servers. Here's to hoping Bliz starts balancing out the population across the servers or doing something that looks like a solution.

Application to Port DOS command

There is a dos command I've used before that list what apps are using what ports and for the life of me I can't recall what it is. I think Brian would know (you out there old roomy?) but does anyone reading this recall what that command is?

Thanks!

Edit: I remember now! It's netstat... lol.

Team America: Thumbs Down

I did not enjoy it. A train wreck you *can* look away from. The voice acting was over the top and action scenes w/ puppets didn't work out so well.

Voice Chat Server?

I've used this a couple of times, seems pretty nice. I prefer ventrillo, but I was wondering, how hard would it be to set one up? I'm thinking about invesitigating this for my guild in star wars galaxies, but we could also use it to chat with each other (and yes, I've heard of skype, sp).

Thoughts, ideas?

Thesis: Defended

Thought I'd spread the good word. On Friday (4/9) I successfully defended my thesis. The presentation went smoothly and the committee took less than 2 minutes to declare I had passed. Score one for me!

The Jedi of Star Wars Galaxies

Hey folks!

Here's a slashdot story with a few tidbits about SWG
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/03/16/...

The real meat is the gamespy article, listed here:
http://www.gamespy.com/articles/march04/galaxies/0...

It's an interesting story about the game I play entirely too much. Aside from that, I'm also quoted a few times, but my name was not spelled correctly for some reason. I even went back and checked what I had sent in to them, I had my name spelled correctly there...

Anyhow, when you see a quote from 'Jef' the Tempest Jedi, that would be me. I'm the only Tempest Jedi quoted. (For those that don't know, Tempest is the galaxy/server I play on)

I want one... a Master Sword

http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/03/08/...

I've always loved the Zelda games, and who can think of a cooler sword than this? I want one for myself, but I don't think I'm going to fork over that kind of cash anytime soon.

Repetitive Radio Stations...

So I started listening to the radio again. Lots of different stations, very similar music. Seems my choices are Modern, Spanish, Classical, really old music, and gansta-rap. Since I listen to 'modern' music, I tend to switch between those stations. Trouble is, I think I've heard the same dozen songs 20+ times or so in a week (only driving an hour a day).

Seems rather silly, does someone own all of them or something? Or is this bandwagon metality? Or perhaps record companies just throw money around.... (or all of the above)

A Note for Chris

(Preference: This has to do with a video game)Shortly after you left the game last night, I decided to leave the planet. Of all the luck, I was attacked while waiting for my ship. Fortunately, my assailant did very little damage and the people that were with me delayed him quite a bit. For a moment I thought I might just fight it out, but thought better of it and sped off (winning wouldn't have accomplished anything).

So, you missed another attempt on my virtual life =).

Anyone watch the Fox Fiance show?

I've seen cartoons and movies where a bunch of rich guys sit around and bet on, well, anything. However, looks like it has spilled over into television =).

I find the show amusing, but it just seems to be a "We, Fox, bet 500K that you cannot get maried to this idiot (who's actually an actor) over here. What do you say?" I'm going to watch a couple more episodes, but it does remind me alot of Joe Schmoe...

What are you playing?

Hey all!

I thought I'd mention I got Budokai 2 and I'm back to playing a fighter on the PS2. I'm still playing SWG as well, and given the amount of time SWG takes, I can sometimes play both at the same time! =). Anyhow, what games are all of you playing right now? Just thought I'd share and ask.

Later.

Either WinAmp 3 bites or I just can't find stuff....

I finally decided to put WinAmp on my desktop machine. So I download version 3 and I can't find a darn thing. In particular, I was looking for the plugin support (still can't find it). My favorite plugin is a keyboard shortcut plugin so I can change/play/pause songs while in another application (usually a full screened one). Anyone else have this difficulty? Does this verion of WinAmp take a step back or is it just me?

Matrix Revolutions!

I got to go see it with about 200 of my closest coworkers =). IMO, it was decent. I don't think *any* sequel can stack up to the first Matrix movie, as the mystery surrounding the Matrix and Neo are resolved during that movie. Special effects were awesome, plot was a little light but I don't expect special effects/action packed movies to be too in depth (why are they fighting again? Oh, yeah).

Anyhow, I thought it was good, not great. Anyone else see it yet? =)

It took all of 2 Months to go through a vid card....

You know, I still have/use the Voodoo3 I got about 5 years ago...

Anyway, my new computer's video card went out last night. I'm bummed. Going through SWG withdrawals at present. I was told it would take days to process my 'order' then few more for shipping. I kindly asked to decrease the processing time and the rep said he'd see what he could do. Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes once I get the new card. It's an NVidia 5600 FX (IIRC, 256MB). Later.

Anyone see the 'American' Coupling last night?

Was flipping channels, saw the show 'coupling' and wondered why I wasn't watching BBC... then I recalled Martin talking about the American remake. It just didn't seem as funny as the English one. Especially the actor who they got to play 'Jeff' (blast my common name), wasn't particularly funny or quirky like the English version is.

Anyway, it was the very first episode as far as I can tell, just totally re-acted by an american cast (or mostly american). Why they don't just run the original thing is beyond me.

I am gainfully employed =)

Just thought I'd spread the good news. Got my offer on Monday (went to my boss on Friday evening actually) and I'm taking the position here. My 'official' start date is the 29th, but I'm taking a couple weeks off to unwind a little. I'm just happy I can go full-time, glad it all worked out!

Playing SWG Now

Hey everyone! I decided to take the plunge into MMORPGs with Star Wars Galaxies. So far, I'm having a blast. It's a little like Diablo meets the Sims: you can blow things up or sit around/party/converse/make stuff. Naturally you can go out and shoot at stormtroopers, and despite the movies, they are tough as nails! There's more to it than that, but so far so good. If anyone wants to or ends up playing, let me know! Later.

I'm definitely buying the sequel to my most played PS2 game :-). Check out some screenshots on gamespot:

FLCL on Cartoon Network

Just thought I'd mention this. It's on weekdays at midnight. They did a decent job with the dubbing too. The characters sound just like they do with their original voices. At the very least, I've been able to listen to the dialog a bit better in some spots because it goes rather fast in certain scenes. Later.

More Compy Opinions...

Alright, so most people I've talked to recommend getting a Dell. Surfing their site, I put together the following:
Dimension XPS Series
2.8 GHz, 1GB Mem, 18-inch LCD (I'm tired of my 19-inch crt), 128MB ATI Radeon 9800, 80GB HD, DVD Rom drive, 'Free' CD burner (RW, 48/28/48), 1 Year warranty (I figure it will break before then if it is going to). Total price is 2499 (2500), and there is a 150 rebate, not factored into the price. So it could cost me about 2350.

Strange I don't see how many PCI slots it has... I need at least 1 for wireless access... Anyhow, any thoughts, feedback? Thanks!

Edit: Friend of mine suggested Alienware as a cheaper alternative... it's about the same price wise, but seems like a friendlier website for the technically enabled. Considering I actually know the difference between most of the components... Any advice appreciated. :-)

New Compy Suggestions?

Alright, it's about time for the old dual 400 MHz IBM tower to be replaced (I've had it for 5 years). While it is possible to play WC3 on it, it does slow down at times (and I'd like to eventually play SWG). Since it looks like I can afford a new one, anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to keep it under 2 grand if possible, and I'd like: 2.0+ GHz, 1+ GB RAM, 128+ MB Vid card, 'big' hard drive, 'fast' bus. Not sure what qualifies as 'big' this second for hard drives (I hear 200+ GB drives are now available), or what bus speed machines have these days.

Anyhow, just thought I'd ask. Thanks for any tips!

I got the Warcraft III Exp... two days ago :-)

Well, it was Monday night. The game came out on the 1st and I saw on Blizzard's site they were having two "events" around midnight. One of them was 3 miles from my friend's place. So I managed to convince my friend to go. For our troubles (translated: waiting in line) we got a free T-shirt and poster ('signed' by the dev team). Pretty neat. I've only played a couple missions so far (single player), but I plan on playing it alot more :-).

Later.

Oh, I just forgot to post this yesterday. I was up late that night and it slipped my mind yesterday.

Anyone tried/play MMORPGs?

I was browsing around gamespot today, checking out some of the games that have been released. The new Star Wars Galaxies looks pretty nice, just came out yesterday. Anyone have any experience with these types of games? The Star Wars game looks interesting, and I've only heard about the World of Warcraft that Blizzard is doing... I might be interested in potentially getting one of these, but since it can be a pretty heavy commitment ($50 for the game, $10+ per month), I thought I'd ask my friends first :-).

Later.

Just Running Along.....

Man, being busy can really bite you in the rear. So I graduated, moved all of my worldly belongings back to my home in Fairfield, then took off to Vegas for a couple of days. I didn't gamble (blackjack was 10+ dollars a hand, otherwise I would have), but I did get to see Penn & Teller. Great show. I convinced my Dad to go on stage for the "Magic Bullet" Act (I won't spoil it if you don't know it). Penn was asking for people with "gun" experience (police, military), and I thought "Hey, my dad owns guns..." (turns out it is 7 guns).

Got back from Vegas on Friday. Went to a wedding Saturday. Drove down to Union City today (Sunday). And I start work tomorrow.

Phew, are my everything tired...

Later.

Sophistication at Cal Poly...

Yes, folks, we go to a sophisticated campus. Engineering, architecture, agriculture, college truly is a place of learning. One of the more popular pass-times at this school is for freshmen to declare how smart they are in the newspaper (bottom of the page). The link will likely not work tomorrow, but I'll replace it with the archived link when that's available.

That's what we need...Politician/Newscaster Boxing...

I'll definitely want to watch that show, Bryce. Reminds of the whole "Celebrity Boxing" Fox had on. Maybe we need to put our "leaders" in the ring with each other so they can show each other how they really feel (naturally this would be after they exchange witty comments back and forth, ala Franken and O'Rielly).

I'm not betting against Bryce... I think Franken has odds on this one :-).

(Matt, that's a pretty sweet dual motherboard... mmm, dual motherboards....)

I can't leave you guys alone can I? I don't think the general Internet population is going to get our obscure references, put up with bad grammar, or want to look at our pictures (or pictures of squirrels for that matter)...

I'm surprised Bryce just doesn't remove a bunch of these.
