Anyone tried/play MMORPGs?

I was browsing around gamespot today, checking out some of the games that have been released. The new Star Wars Galaxies looks pretty nice, just came out yesterday. Anyone have any experience with these types of games? The Star Wars game looks interesting, and I've only heard about the World of Warcraft that Blizzard is doing... I might be interested in potentially getting one of these, but since it can be a pretty heavy commitment ($50 for the game, $10+ per month), I thought I'd ask my friends first :-).

Later.

Be careful!

Those MMORPG’s can be dangerous. When I was an RA, we “lost” 7 engineering freshmen to Evercrack, I mean, Everquest. So, I would only recommend one of these time-eaters to those without addictive personalities. So, pretty much anyone who has memorized each and every single move in a fighting game based on hundreds of hours of Anime should probably not get started with one.

Ouch....

Next time put some gloves on to soften the blow...

Too expensive.

For my money, these things ain't worth $10+ a month. Especially the recent crop; I've yet to hear a particularly positive review of a MMORPGS other than Diablo 2. And that one's free. ^_^ Although... World of Worldcraft would combine Blizzard's Midas touch, business sense, and overall ass-kickingness with Evercrack's addictiveness. That might be worth the entry fee. Wonder if a pay-to-play model is possible for Blizzard without ruining their Diablo charm?

World of Warcraft & Star Wars...

These were the two that I've been reading about. I wasn't considering the other ones, and I'm wondering the same thing: how good will Blizzard's be?

Sorry

I guess that was a little harsh. It is just that we lost so many froshies.... Anyway, I actually think that a MMORPG would be very fun to play. I have been reading about the Star Wars one and it sounds great. But as Martin said, it is $14.95 a month on top of the $50 to buy the game in the first place. If they were free -- or maybe $14.95 with first month free -- it would be great. Though make sure to wait a little, these things always have many launch problems. And I don't really think that you have an addictive personality, just remember if you do start one, tell us and buy a nice sun lamp for your watch.

Heh, Sun Lamp...

Now that is funny. I wasn't planning on getting one anytime soon. First step, full time job. Second step, new compy (I'll be consulting Matt, you've got sweet deals don't ya Matt?). Third step, games. Aside from the occaisional PS2 games I'll pick up, I don't plan on playing too many new games in the near future. Admittedly I have been playing Diablo 2 again (closed character) and I'll probably actually buy Warcraft III and the expansion when it comes out (hear that Bryce?). Later.
