Now...

The real reason for my post is I'm going to buy a digital camera, and I was wondering if y'all had any recommendations for good sites to check for reviews or good brands/models of cameras you've used yourself.

That said, I HAVE just shaved off my beard (I was bored), and I once again look twelve. The faster I buy a camera, the faster I'll post a pic, for those who've never seen this phenomenon. ^_^

my sources

I just bought a Canon PowerShot S400 (just as in before my trip to Alaska 2 months ago), and other than many recommendations for Canon from friends, I used Digital Photography Review and Epinions. I'm very happy with the camera itself. The software on the computer could be better, but you don't *have* to use it if you have XP since it can download pictures from cameras on its own. The advantage of using their software, though, is it'll auto-rotate the pictures since the camera remembers what the orientation was when the shot was taken. This information is stored separately (the picture on the card is always in landscape) but their software will do the transformation on the downloaded pictures if you use it to download them. I've just lived with their software; it isn't horrible but as I said, it could be better. Canon has a few different lines of cameras from the small Digital Elph (which mine is) through their SLR cameras on the high end. I've also heard good things about Olympus cameras, though I don't have any personal experience with them.

On its way

Thanks for the suggestions, guys; those are some good sites, and I used them to make a decision. Ordered an Olympus 750 from one of those crappy online stores in NY that sell stuff really cheap but won't ship it until you call them. They send you an e-mail saying they need to talk to you about your credit card, then lay in on the sales pitch (paid on commision). There's five or six of 'em that are really the same store on the back end, and if they didn't sell things for as much as 10% cheaper than other stores (because they hope to make their money on their horribly overpriced, crappy 3rd-party accessories) I wouldn't even consider it. Plus, it's hard to find an out-of-state electronics dealer these days; tax can ad up on big purchases.
