Rant

You all remember Martin’s post on how Deus Ex 2 for the PC was dumbed-down because of its concurrent development for the X-Box (well, maybe only I do, but bear with me). Spiderman 2 for the X-box, PS2, and Gamecube is one of the most fun games I have played since GTA3. It is not a better game, and it is certainly missing a few key elements better left for another post, but it has a much higher FEQ (Freedom of Exploration Quotient) than GTA3. You can go anywhere the acrobatics you make up will allow. The system for SL (Spidey-Locomotion) is so fluid and dynamic to be inspirational. And all this through a 1/10 model of Manhattan without any load times.

Spiderman 2 for the PC is, in a word, stupid, and to steal from a Gamespot review, in two words, incredibly stupid. Instead of freeform game play that moves at your own pace, evolving with your skill, you get nothing. The game is now broken down to little sections of city with great load times in-between. The game has one button. The left mouse button. One. It does everything, or rather, whatever one action you could do at the present time. It punches, kicks, swings, shoots, opens doors and makes dinner, well, maybe not that last one. Activision gave the nice console game one company made to another company, and told them to simplify it. They made it for 7-12 year olds. This makes lots of sense. Adults all have $200 consoles while the little kids have the high-end gaming machines.

You would think that this would be simple, it is just a different game. But no, they put it in the same exact box as the console ones. Only the price changed. So, you have two identical boxes, one $20 less and for you nice computer, which would you buy?

Wow

Damn, thanks for the warning. I'd read such good things about the console Spidey game that I was thinking of getting it, and of course I'd get the PC version. After all, they have the same box. Yeesh, this crap borders on fraud.
